Capture the Tiara

Hello, my name is Celeni. I just opened this account to join the Multiply wave. But really, I'd rather be on the LiveJournal one.

Newsweek recently published how user-generated sites are now the face of the Internet. Here's the other sites where you can face me: Friendster, flickr, & last.fm

LEAVE ME ALONE AND DON'T ADD ME IF YOU GOT HERE BECAUSE OF THE OBLATION RUN FOOTAGE. Hahaha. Seriously.

Petition for the Reproductive Health Bill

Thanks to Kenneth Cardenas.

Economically, this bill would definitely help alleviate poverty. Population control would be more manageable, and households are able to be within their ideal family size.

Aside from that, it is in Article II of the 1987 Constitution that there should be separation of church and state and that MOTHERS are to be protected (well,as well as their unborn). The ability to control family size is the best way to protect the institution of the family and this bill will be the best way that the State could aid these social units to maximise civic efficiency.

Yun lang.

College of Law Freshman Week

19 - 23 August 2008

Well, Block A was AMAZING. We were the Over-all Champions. We practically swept all the events. Hahahaha. It was super fun.

Photos from me otherwise noted.
Class of the Week: Consti 1

In Constitution Law 1 class, we discussed Tañada v. Angara, a case involving the constitutionality of one of the WTO treaties that the Philippines acceded to. Yes, I was called on to stir a discussion on liberalised trade policies, but my teacher kept on intervening me and when asked "could we get away with WTO?" [context: he was leaning towards the perception of abuses from developed countries to poorer countries through a multilateral trade forum], to which I replied a hasty "No...", I was interrupted before I could qualify my answer.

"Well, if you have no choice but to be raped, might as well enjoy it."
- Prof. Sison (probably not verbatim, but you get the thought)

Benta sa class. But it was a slippery slope comment in bad taste. If that's the case, then the more difficult rape cases will be litigated since the pleasure defence is always used to counter lack of consent. But that's beside the point. Bilang Econ major, I know that the G8-slash-US could be garapal in trade settlements <strike>so...

Ang Pagpapatuloy ng Pagpapawarla sa NEDA

Bilang isang law student, I have to resort to asking my dad for a concise brief of the events of Iisa Pa Lamang for the past two weeks it's been running, and relying on my Persons and Family Relation cases for my drama/telenovela fix, considering I can't stage my own due to limited time constraints (kidding). And sometimes, I source entertainment from political situations that mires the country. But this is just beyond apalling. I refuse to equate the likes of Dr. Paderanga, Ma'am Monsod and Cielito Habito and heck, maybe even Romulo Neri to Ralph Recto. Ew.

Summer Marathon

I wrote this entry half a month ago, I had to change the introduction. Hahaha. Well, what else can I say, this is the mandatory end-of-summer blog entry! It was a fabulous summer, save for the real ending of it. Anyway, I need to keep track of the fabulous bits, so here is a really, really long entry!
Lost in Hong Kong

26 - 30 May 2008
In 2006, my sister went to Hong Kong with her friend Marian and her family, and I went to Hong Kong for my 10-hour layover from England while I waited for my dad for his from Malaysia. The last time I was here, I was just there for five hours, my sister, around five days. Hehe. Kulang na kulang talaga.

So my sister and I flew to Hong Kong dahil "Anak, sayang ang miles" (my dad always flies Cathay because it's his supply hub for his Airsoft stuff, ergo, accumulated and expiring miles) and we literally wanted to take a "shopping trip". (You take a trip, and then you shop). One of the last known hubs of Esprit and China-goods galore (oh, and the nearest H&M locator from the Philippines!), Hong Kong is truly "the" Asian city. It's not like super mura, but the stuff there are super kawaii, you know, hindi ka-level ng Japan or Korea, pero pwede na rin. Longer travel narrative later, ang daming inuutos sa akin ng mga tao, nakaka-stress!

Last Day ng Summer Raket

23 May 2008 || TNS (Quezon City), ADB (Pasig)
Since 17 April, I took part of a special project that TNS conducted for ADB. I was mostly with my batchmates, whom I've never bonded with before, prior to this project. It was a fun and learning experience, as in ang dami kong natutunan, mula sa pag-co-commute to the Greater Manila Area and beyond, how to talk to receptionists and book interviews, how to look for interview subjects and best of all, the REAL impact of free-trade agreements on the firm level. It was interesting because I know FTAs by theory and even in studying theory, I find it hard to conceive how to facilitate in IRL. Well, it was a very enlightening experience talaga. Sayang ngayon lang kami nag-picture-an. The memories were lasting (in a very mixed sentiment kinda way). CHOZ. TAMA NA.

My Blueberry Nights

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0765120/
Wong Kar-Wai (WKW) emerges with his first non-Asian film, with a full-"western" cast and set in the United States. The film itself? As amazing as his previous films. WKW is a master storyteller and a master at using the medium of film to express emotions and tell beautiful stories.

Plot: A young woman travels America after a heartbreak enough to discover herself in the process of seeing other people's lives.

The sub-plots in this film were neatly tied up by the main narrative that went to the story. Each story had an implicit relevance to the main narrative, with a recurring theme of love and love lost. The story was simply wonderful. I am not certain if the dialogue hold much water, because WKW has been a master of "show, don't tell" and I must admit there weren't really any, jaw-dropping strong statements or witty dialogue (Chungking Express is my benchmark for this in WKW films hehehehehehe). Is it a translation flaw? I don't know, but the...

I'm posting this review as fair warning. DO NOT WATCH THIS FILM. Okay, I give it one star kasi walang zero star, at medyo fun naman siyang panoorin kung fun yung kasama mo (it's only fun to watch it when you're with someone). It's mindless horror. BLEH.

It's about a photographer who brings his wife to Tokyo and realizes that a lot of their pictures have "spiritual marks". Apparently, this phenomenon means that there's a disturbed spirit that is trying to communicate something to them.

Well, the problem with this film is that while it's talking about spirit, the characters were all spirit-less. They were flat, boring, and unusually mindless. As in ang daming BAWAL ANG TANGA moments. Who are the actors anyway? Si Joshua Jackson lang kilala ko, and he was horrid in that film.

And everything from the camera-work to the music is too set-up, it becomes too predictable. Fine, there were moments that were scream-inducing, but these moments are also expected. I really hated the eerie m...

The Other Boleyn Girl

The only knowledge I knew about the Tudors was about King Henry XIII and his meandering with establishing the Church of England to divorce his wife Catherine of Aragon. Of course I found the issue feisty and scandalous, but you kind of forget the relevance of the "other" wives knowing that he has six of them.

But then you meet the Boleyn sisters. Romanticised in the novel "The Other Boleyn Girl" by Philippa Gregory, the adaptation to film was just AMAZING. I've had a copy at hand for awhile, but I haven't gotten around watching it until now. (The last film I saw was a month ago, I do not win in life.)

But yes, I've wanted to watch it because of the stellar cast (any movie with Natalie Portman = FTW) and strong feminist tones. Not that I'm a hard-core feminist, but seriously, if you want to see the throve of female manipulation in the middle ages, this is it. I loved Kristin Scott Thomas's character as Lady Elizabeth Boleyn. Again, here's my fetish for minor characters, but she wa...

Tab Room Magic

One day left before the conclusion of the 2008 Philippine Inter-collegiate Debate Competition: the Sun Life Cup. Yang Villa and I were the tab directors (a.k.a., score inputting slaves) for the tournament, and see the "magic" we've been doing at the tab room

Future Blockmate?

I'm writing this down on multiply because apparently, LiveJournal wants to use Beacon, one of the many reasons while LJers are doing an LJ Content Strike.

***
I uh... passed the Law Aptitude Exam (LAE) for my university's College of Law. I am passer #128, and my interview is in one week, March 28th. The numbers are pointing to my favour (if it were a pure number-luck game), but you have no idea how scared I am.

But spotted, passer #178. Like Steph Tan, he attended International School of Manila. He likes acting and theatre so he took a short course from the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts in London (um, medyo, sila Jude Law lang naman ang nag-attend nun). He finished his undergrad in NYU. He took a gap year and is with Repertory Philippines (he played Prince Charming in Cinderella) and is part of ABS-CBN's Star Magic.

I guess more interesting than passer #178's credentials, is his FAMILY. He's a famous congresswoman's son and the brother of a model-slash-host. But of course, the best part...

Last day of classes does NOT equate to end of term, because, it feels like I literally have A LOT to finish.

The first four photos were from Tin Dela Cruz's Camera. Thanks

River Crossing Riddle

Mind-boggling, but you can do this. I did it in less than 10 minutes (desperately, still procrastinating), I wasn't really timing myself. First through trial & error. And then the second time it took 6 minutes, but then I got boggled more, but I wrote how to do it na, if you get boggled, just PM me for the answers (or you can ask Google). I know a lot of people have been having problems with logic lately.

Oh!!! The instructions are in Chinese. Here's the translation:
    * Everybody has to cross the river
    * Only 2 people on the raft at a time
    * The father cannot stay with any of the daughters without their mother's presence.
    * The mother cannot stay with any of the sons without their father's presence.
    * The thief cannot stay with any family member if the Policeman is not there.
    * Only the Father, the Mother and the Policeman know how to operate the raft.
    * To start, click on the big blue circle on the right.
    * To move the people, click on them....

Douglass North Aftermath

Celeni and her chums (Arianne Ferrer, Nikko Briguera, Bo Jimenez and Sam Tirthdas - although not seen on film) comments on 1993 Econs Nobel Prize Winner Douglass North for his lecture on "Why Institutions Matter". He is the second Nobel Laureate (only after Kuznets!) to grace the wonderful UP School of Economics. (=
